Patterns of a Tactile Score, 2017-2018
Watercolor on paper
14 x 14 inches
This work is an iteration of the process-based research in the fine weaving technique of Jamdani. One of the finest muslin textiles of Bengal, the skill for making it is in danger of becoming a lost art with the automation of the textile industry and readily available cheap machine-made fabrics.
The delicately woven textile forms and drawings are inspired by an array of floral and geometric motifs. Painted in the manner of graph paper, an aid used by weavers to guide design, the logic of the network of squares is clearly manifest. The drawings, deliberately displayed as a grid, together form lyrical patterns that read like a musical score, resembling floor tile patterns and kaleidoscopic Islamic architecture of the shrines and old palaces of Bengal.
